ADL Mahre “Corona” Camp 9.0

Published by Kyle Watson on

The 9th Annual ADL Mahre Camp took place at Mt. Hood on June 24-26th, 2020. We overcame the challenges of hosting an event during the Covid-19 lockdowns and pulled off our largest camp ever. Over 28 campers came from all over the country to train with Phil, Steve, Mark Burandt and American Downhill legend AJ Kitt. We capped off the weekend with our legendary Nageln Tournament of Champions at the Glacier Public House in Government Camp and crowned a new champion.

The gang was masked up and ready to rob the mountain.

Day 1: Friday we got straight up to lane 6 on the Palmer Snowfield for some GS laps. The weather was perfect and although it would have been better to start off with drills to get back the ski legs, the mountain was going to do unplanned maintenance on the Palmer lift Saturday so we had no choice. The racers didn’t mind and took full advantage of the two course sets. Coach Mark Burandt was taking video while Phil, Steve and AJ gave feedback and pointers to everyone during the session.

Bad Joe Neal in his 9th straight camp showed everyone that age is just a number as he ripped up the Palmer Course.

Day 2: Saturday we had the right lane off the Miracle Mile salted and almost all to ourselves to run drills and get the Mahres patented explanation of how to properly turn a ski. We ran through a number of drills designed to break down the various elements of good skiing. The session was appreciated by newer racers as well as seasoned veterans, who learned new tricks of the trade from the masters themselves.

Saturday night we held the 6th annual Nageln Tournament of Champions. It was an exciting and fun filled night with it all coming down to a couple of rookies in the finals – Andrew Vetterlein came up against a pumped up Danny Villicich, with a chance to get his name on the now classic trophy alongside other greats of the sport and walk away with Andrews generously donated 1985 Porsche Carrera, Danny didn’t falter. He was about to lose it all by a nails width. Andrew only had to make contact and victory was his. Danny had at least an inch to go and he pounded it in with one shot! Victory was sweet. Congrats Danny!

The ADL Non Profit – was very proud to sponsor Jamaican Olympic hopeful Benjamin Alexander. His camp tuition was covered and he gained some valuable training and education from the Mahres as he attempts to qualify in GS for the 2022 Winter Olympics. IF he can get his FIS points down to 161 he will be the first Jamaican to race in Alpine at the Olympics. We had a great time with Benjamin on and off the hill. He came down early and skinned high up on Mt Hood the day before camp started with a few of the ADL founders and then had a productive camp. He even learned some tuning basics from Mark Batho and Peter Dodd. It was great to become friends with Benjamin and help him in his quest. ADL Members can be proud of their donations and other contributions to the 2Hammers. Good Luck Benjamin!

Finally, we want to thank Matt Schreiner the new owner of the Glacier Public House for graciously hosting our Saturday Night Nageln party. He overcame the challenges of opening during the Covid-19 panic and allowed us to carry on our traditional contest and party. We had a great time, enjoyed his great food and were never short of beers in our glasses. If you are ever in Government Camp stop by Matt’s place and tell him the ADL sent you!!
