TOPICS OF THE TALK:
Caught up in the swirl of a busy modern existence, many of us find ourselves looking back and wondering “What would have happened if…?”
With imagery of the world’s most storied mountain ranges as a backdrop, Chad Sayers engages audiences with a visual journey through his own dream-come-true. life as a professional freeskier.
Of course, there’s no real way of knowing what kind of life pursuing a dream might bring, or what the costs and rewards might have been. The closest we can come is to experience it vicariously through someone who doggedly lived their own—and through that realize that perhaps some of our own dreams are still within reach.
Overexposure – The Book
“In photography, overexposure occurs when too much light floods a moment; in skiing, where “exposure” suggests great risk, overexposure can be fatal. In each case, the remedy is clear. Released in 2021 by Rocky Mountain Books, Overexposure is a volume like no other. Part intoxication, part expurgation, this visual two-decade journey of self-discovery is a story you’re unsure of in a package you can’t put down.“
From a youth spent fantasizing about skiing to the life of a professional freeskier where success brought celebrity, sponsorship, travel, and freedom. There was no denying the many benefits of living in this spotlight, but there was also no denying the price: living his dream was also a treadmill of daily risk and peril that eventually set Sayers adrift from family, friends, lovers—even himself. Somewhere, he crossed a line of solitude that only made sense in front of a camera. But as injuries and other traumas piled up, the only path to survival was to walk away from even that. Embarking on a journey of mental and physical healing, the path eventually led Sayers back to the mountains, where he found his dream was very much still alive.
Travel Opportunities with Chad & History with the ADL Ski Club:
Many of the flights for Chad’s global adventures were planned by ADL Founder Kyle Watson during his days running Justfares.com. The Skiers Journey Team were crisscrossing the globe from Iran, Pakistan, Dubai, to France, the Baffn Islands, down to S. America and back to Japan and more – Living vicariously through Chad and knowing in advance the destinations of the next productions was exciting.
Skiing with Chad: Over the years we have tried to link up with Chad in Europe during our DreamTrips. Last winter our schedules converged in Switzerland for our Engelberg DreamTrip. Chad graciously skied and guided us around the huge expanse of freeriding terrain, sharing his favorite zones and giving us a great intro to the mountain and the week ahead.
Traveling with Chad: Prior to Covid we had planned a small group trip with Chad to La Grave in France. Unfortunately, it had to be cancelled but future trips are possible. If anyone would like to go to La Grave with the ADL & Chad this night in Seattle will be a great opportunity to discuss that with us and Chad.
We are excited to host Chad and share his stories with the club – We look forward to seeing you all there. If you have any questions about the event please email us at info@adlskiclub.com
